Islay is a famous well known island due mainly to its Whisky distilleries that are visited every year by tenths thousands of people. Distilleries like Laphroaig, Bowmore since 1779, Lagavulin, Ardberg, Bruichladdich or Caol Ila sale millions of bottles all over the world. Distilleries use peat of the land to dry wet malt. Therefore you can smell peat smoke in each of these fantastic local made whiskies . A special mention to Bruichladdich which uses a local organic malt to create one whisky.However Islay remains a very scenic island with plenty of gorgeous landscapes. Several nature reserves give visitors an opportunity to approach wild species such as : the Chough an endemic bird. You also can observe Seals, Dolphins, Otters, Deers, Herons, Harriers and so on.... and meet the famous Scottish Highland Cow during one of your trek.
